al, but the wife has said no. Well now 1 side of the propane burners has gone bad, so we need to either get a new grill or use charcoal. She is still anti charcoal, so my question is how long does it take for the charcoal to become cooking temperature, then how long once it is warmed up to cook a burger, or piece of chicken. Any and all info would be great.

once the charcoals turn grey, they are ready to cook on. Times should take as long as a gas grill.
The lighter fluid when you do what to cook everything like that it is ok cooking though take little longer than with propane becuase no matter how long the charcoal grills are good here and there but to get hot as what to get hot as what propane becuase no matter how long the charcoal grills are good.
It depends a lot on how you start the fire, and what kind of charcoal you use. For a beginner, I would go ahead and suggest using Kingsford briquettes. They are not the conniseur’s choice, but they provide good heat and most importantly are consistent. They are generally pretty fast starting and burn evenly.
If you use Kingsford and start with lighter fluid, you are probably looking at about 15 minutes before you are ready to grill, but the key like others have said is for the coals to ash over and be gray.
As far as how long it takes to cook food, it should be no longer than a gas grill, and could be shorter because charcoal fires can generally reach higher temperatures.
A lot of info on starting a charcoal fire at the link.
